What kind of ESOL assessment do you need?

An initial assessment helps a provider understand your English, learning goals and support needs. A qualification assessment checks the requirements of a particular award. Before choosing a sample, find out which one you are preparing for.

Use the original practice tasks below to become familiar with reading questions, writing a response and having a short conversation. They are not an official paper, a placement test or a qualification result.

Sample reading task

Read this message.

Hi Omar, our study group is meeting in the cafe on Monday at 4 pm. The library room is closed this week. Please bring your notebook. You can buy a drink, but you do not have to. Tell me by Sunday if you can come. Thanks, Eva.

Question A: Where is the group meeting?

Question B: Why are they not using the library room?

Question C: When should Omar reply?

Question D: Does he need to buy a drink?

Reading answers and evidence

A: In the cafe. B: The library room is closed this week. C: By Sunday. D: No; buying a drink is optional.

Check the difference between the meeting day and the reply deadline. A useful reading habit is to locate the exact sentence that supports an answer.

Sample writing task

Write a reply saying you can attend. Confirm where you will go and ask how long the meeting will last.

Example: Hi Eva, thank you for your message. I can come to the cafe on Monday at 4 pm. I will bring my notebook. What time will the meeting finish? See you there, Omar.

Check that your reply contains all the requested information. This example is one possible response, not the only correct wording.

Speaking and listening with a partner

Ask a partner to read this short message aloud while you look away from the text: The next group meets on Friday at half past three. Please wait outside Room 2.

Listen for the day, time and room. Then check the text. Answers: Friday, 3:30, Room 2. This page has no audio player; the partner supplies the listening activity.

For speaking, explain what you want to improve in English. Your partner can ask which situations you find difficult and what you already practise. Ask a question back so that it becomes a conversation.

For more practice, try a short Entry 1 conversation and listen to an original appointment recording. The recordings include transcripts and explanations; these activities are not official assessment papers.

How should you use your answers?

Note what you completed independently, what you needed help with and which instructions were unclear. Share those observations with your tutor. This short activity cannot reliably assign an ESOL level or provide a pass mark.

Where are the official sample papers?

Gateway's sample-assessment page lists papers by skill and level, from Entry 1 to Level 2. Ask your provider which awarding organisation you use and choose its materials. A retired sample can illustrate a task, but your tutor should confirm the current format and rules.

For more everyday practice, use ESOL English's reading, videos and quizzes through the two download buttons above.

For additional original learning activities alongside your provider’s samples, use Entry 3 reading questions with answer evidence. They explain distractors without inventing an official pass mark.
