How to Compare Website Design Proposals for a Birmingham Business

Compare website proposals using the same page list, features, responsibilities, exclusions, ownership and ongoing support requirements.

Website design proposals are only comparable when they describe the same work. One may include content preparation, product uploads and support while another covers layouts alone. Before choosing a provider, turn each proposal into a list of deliverables and responsibilities.

Match the pages and tasks

List the pages each provider will deliver and the customer tasks they must support. “Booking website” is not enough detail: does it collect a request or confirm availability? “Online shop” should identify catalogue preparation, checkout and order handling. Ask the provider to demonstrate or describe the agreed behaviour.

Identify content responsibilities

Record who writes descriptions, supplies photographs, uploads products and approves factual claims. Check whether migration from an existing site is included. Missing content can affect both delivery and the work required after the initial design.

List dependencies and exclusions

Ask which accounts, subscriptions, data or external approvals are required. Record excluded tasks alongside included ones. If a feature depends on a third-party service, clarify who configures it and who handles a failure.

Separate initial and ongoing commitments

Compare the build scope separately from hosting, external services, maintenance and future changes. Use current written charges from the provider. Ask what happens when the business needs a new page or feature rather than assuming every future change is included.

Confirm ownership and handover

Clarify domain ownership, hosting access, administrative permissions and any source or export arrangements. Ask what the business receives at handover and what depends on retaining the provider’s service. Record training and documentation where staff need them.

Define acceptance

Agree how the work will be checked: key pages, phone layouts, forms, notifications and any shopping or booking tasks. Identify who approves completion and how faults in the agreed scope are resolved. A screenshot is evidence of appearance, not of working integrations.

Compare unanswered questions

Put unresolved assumptions in one place and ask each provider to answer them. A shorter proposal is not necessarily less capable, but an unclear scope should be clarified before a commitment is made. Choose on the agreed work and operating model, not a headline alone.
